Home  /  KilAire ESD valves

When a diesel runs away, air is the only thing left to take.

KilAire is our own line of mechanical overspeed controls — air-intake emergency shutdown valves that close the intake and stop an engine running on gas it shouldn’t be burning. The design uses a tapered butterfly that seals metal to metal — no rubber O-ring, nothing to perish. Maintenance-free, and 100% made in the U.S.A. in Channelview, Texas.

The lineup

Two materials, six sizes between them.

Pick the bore to match the intake, then the body to match the duty. Stainless covers the full range and is the standard choice for marine and hazardous service; aluminium comes in the 3" and 5" bores at a lower cost per unit. Same valve inside either one. These go into marine, trucking, off-road, oil field, and chemical plant machinery — anywhere a runaway engine is a fire waiting to happen, whether regulation requires it or experience does.

5"500-AFS-S500-AFS-A

Not sure which bore you need? Give us the engine and we’ll tell you what fits — and if the throat is smaller than the valve, there is almost certainly an adapter for it.

Throat adapters

The 3" valve steps down to anything from 1-3/4" to 2-7/8". Larger bores step down too.

The full range, and the standard choice for towboat mains, gensets, and anything working in salt air or a hazardous area. Shown: the 400-AFS-S, 4" stainless.

Anodised aluminium KilAire shutdown valves, 3 inch and 5 inch, side by side on a shop bench

Aluminium

300-AFS-A · 500-AFS-A

Anodised aluminium body in the 3" and 5" bores — both shown. Same tapered-butterfly internals and the same four shutdown modes as the stainless, at a lower cost per unit — the specification to ask about when stainless is more than the job needs.

The 5" here wears the older ESD-Valve label. Same valve: we bought the line, and cores still come back to us marked that way.

How it trips

Four ways to close it.

Turn the knob handle clockwise and the shaft flag drops into the lock lever — the valve is set. From there, four ways to trip it. Tell us how your shutdown system is wired or plumbed and we build it to suit.

01

Manual cable

A remote wire or cable trips the lock lever from the wheelhouse, engine room, or a deck station. Nothing to power, nothing to fail. If the standard lever hole doesn’t suit your cable run, we open it up to suit.

02

Electric solenoid

A 12 or 24 volt solenoid mounts to the side of the valve on its own bracket, so the engine shuts down at the push of a button or off your existing alarm system.

03

Pneumatic

Where air is available, a pneumatic cylinder mounts in place of the solenoid. Runs normally open or normally closed, whichever your loop expects.

04

Air and fuel

Built from a customer request: an adder that closes the valve and kills the electronic fuel pump at the same time, on a plate and bracket off the side of the valve.

A made-to-order build — solenoid, wiring pigtail, and manual reset knob fitted before it leaves the bench.

Made to order

If the standard build doesn’t fit your job, we’ll build the one that does.

A good share of what leaves this shop is made to order. We assemble here, so a change is a bench decision, not a six-month engineering programme.

  • Valves supplied with solenoids fitted and wired
  • Companion fuel shut-off valves
  • Manual reset knobs and remote reset arrangements
  • Actuation swapped to suit an existing ESD system
  • Direct-fit replacements for the shutdown valves already on your engines

Cores & rebuilds

Your worn valve is worth something.

Send a worn KilAire back as a core and we’ll discount your next one. New or rebuilt, whichever you decide to buy — the core comes off the price either way. Cores are our own units only.

  1. 01 Send us your worn KilAire as a core.
  2. 02 Choose your replacement — new, or rebuilt.
  3. 03 The core discount comes off whichever you pick.

Already running shutdown valves?

Your next one could come from Channelview.

Ours drop into the same intakes, ship the day after you order, and are built by the people who answer the phone when you call. Pull the old unit, send us the size, and we’ll match it — one valve to try, or a fleet’s worth.
